Try The Green Dog: A Mostly True Story by Suzanne Fisher Staples. It's a great end of the summer read about a girl named Suzanne who can't wait to spend her summer fishing, hiking, and hanging out with her dog, Jeff. The only problem is.. she hasn't got a dog! Unwilling to make human friends, she spends her time by the lake daydreaming about all of the things she and Jeff will do- until miraculously, he appears at her door. What follows is a hilarious adventure with laugh-aloud trouble at every turn. But even the best of summers must end, and this one must come to a bittersweet end as well.
You'll love reading about these two characters. Like Henry and Mudge, Suzanne and Jeff are sure to become favorites with readers of all ages.

Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson (author) and Tiphanie Beeke (illustrator) is a touching and simple story.
Fletcher the fox sees that his favorite tree is going through a change. As the tree's leaves change color and begin to drop, Fletcher begins to worry. He tries to pin the leaves back on the tree. He's afraid that it is sick. His mother reassures him that it is normal. Then, one night, when he awakes he sees the tree covered in many "laughing", tinkling icicles and he is happy.
The book teaches about caring and the changing of the seasons and is appropriate for K-2.
Chickerella by Mary Jane and Herm Aush is a hilarious retelling of the classic fairytale Cinderella. What makes this story even more special is the care and creativity of the pictures - the pictures may even eclipse the story with their vibrancy and attention to detail.
This is a book that is sure to not be put down until the reader is finished looking at all the pages - then perhaps the reader will take the time to read the book and enjoy both story and art together as the authors meant them to be.
Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris takes a fairy-tale setting and turns it into delightful, silly read with infrequent, but insightful glimpses of love and family.
Christian is a small boy who runs away and is fortunately discovered by Edric, a troll, who takes him in and raises him. From his odd but happy home he watches the royal princesses through a telescope over the course of years and finds himself falling in love with the youngest, shunned princess. On the edge of manhood, he leaves home and gets a job at the castle just to be near her. Once there, he discovers the diabolical plan of the queen to bump off her daughter.
A fun story that will enterain boys and girls grades 5 though 9.
